Getting Beautiful Bridals with Video

posted May 16, 2011 10:48 AM by Brad Gashler

So you have the wedding dress, and you've found the perfect location for bridals?  Now you need to pick the best time and day to get your bridals.  Here are a few tips to help you get the very best pictures and video possible during your bridal shoots.

Catch the Golden Hour Sunset

Golden hour is the time of day that will make your photos the most soft and full of rich, warm colors.  Photo and film/video professionals use the term Golden Hour to describe the time that is one hour before sunset.  When the sun is lower in the sky, light is softened as it passes through more air before it reaches us.  This really makes colors pop and ugly shadows disappear.

Look at the Weather Channel's website to see when sunset will be and plan on going about two hours before it goes down completely.

Ask your Photographer to Use Reflectors

Reflectors minimize ugly, hard-edged shadows that can ruin pictures.

Check the Hourly Forecast to Avoid Surprise Weather

The Weather Channel's website's link is above, and it has an hourly forecast.  It helps to know whether you should plan on moving your photos to morning or evening the day before so you can arrange it with your photographer and videographer.

Winter Wedding Tips

This was winter wedding turned out beautiful, and look the bride was well-prepared to face the cold.
W
inter weather can make for beautiful photography for those willing to brave the cold.  For those of you who will be getting married in winter weather, here are some tips on how to have a comfortable experience and get beautiful results with your photography and videography.

The Coat-Bearer

Because the bride will likely be wearing little more than a wedding dress, it's important that you have someone with a warm coat standing by between shots to help her stay warm.  In addition to offering comfort, this will help avoid skin turning pale and from shivering during shots.

The Essentials

  • Coat for the Bride
  • Hand Warmers
  • Umbrella (to keep Bride's hair dry)
  • Good Shoes
An interesting idea that I saw on the last wedding I filmed was the bride wore boots instead of typical dress shoes.  If you don't want people to know you're wearing boots then we won't show them, but being bold enough to wear boots deserves to be in the video; it's a neat way to show your adventurous personality.

Your Worst Enemy

Besides the cold, you need to worry about the moisture, such as snow, rain and puddles of slush.  Using the umbrella between shots will help prevent the bride's hair from becoming messed up from getting wet.

Watch out for slush and wet surfaces.  Some photographers and videographers like to have you sit down on say a bench or in front of a pond; obviously, we won't ask you to do that if it's not going to be practical, but if you want to get these shots anyway, you can bring a sheet of plastic or a garbage bag to sit on so you don't get lovely marks on your clothes where you sat down.

Finally

Don't sweat it—not that you will, because it will likely be too cold to sweat.  Winter weddings are beautiful in their own way.  You might be cold the day of, but you will have the warm memories of your wedding video to look back on for the rest of your life.

Show off your wedding video

So, you scheduled your wedding videographer to film your special day, now what?  Well, have you thought about asking for a Same Day Edit?  With Same Day Edit, you can show the ceremony or outside the temple (for LDS) at your reception.  Your guests can experience the cinematic magic of your special day while they are at the reception.  This service is optional, but we offer it for those who want to be able to show their video the day it was shot.

"Future-proof" Wedding Videos

posted Dec 13, 2010 12:07 PM by Brad Gashler

A lot of people have HDTVs but don't have a Blu-Ray player for playing HD videos.  Whether or not you currently own a Blu-Ray player, we highly recommend getting your wedding video delivered on Blu-Ray Disc so that you will have more options in the future.  Our base package always includes 3 DVDs, and packages above the base (Gold and Platinum) include Blu-Ray Discs as well.

Remember when VHS went out of style?  Well, that could very well be the fate of DVDs in the coming years.  Besides the extended expectation of technological life of Blu-Ray, it's a a smart choice to get both Blu-Ray and DVD, even if you currently can't play Blu-Ray discs.

At some point you probably will have a Blu-Ray player, and then you can enjoy your wedding video in high-definition.  Gashler Films now offers Blu-Ray Discs with premium packages for more future-proof wedding videos.
